CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS IN KENYA TURKANA WEST KAKUMA ,KALOBEYEI REFUGEE AND HOST COMMUNITIES          

Dear Prospective Volunteers,

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Stop Child Abuse (SCA) in Kenya, specifically at the Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kalobeyei Settlement and host communities.

We greatly appreciate your dedication to promoting children’s rights and child protection. Your involvement can make a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable children in these communities.

To ensure that we maintain a high standard of care and professionalism, we have set specific criteria for individuals who wish to join our volunteer program. Please review the following details and ensure you meet the requirements before submitting your application:

  1. Age Requirement: Volunteers must be 18 years or older. This is to ensure maturity and the ability to handle sensitive matters related to child protection.
  • Background Check: All applicants will be required to undergo a thorough background check to ensure the safety and well-being of the children we serve.
  • Commitment: We expect volunteers to be committed to the cause and willing to dedicate a significant amount of time and effort to their roles. A minimum commitment of six months is preferred to ensure continuity and build meaningful relationships with the children.
  • Skills and Experience: While no specific qualifications are required, previous experience working with children, especially in the context of child protection or advocacy, will be highly valued. However, a genuine passion for children’s rights and a willingness to learn are equally important.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Volunteers must demonstrate cultural sensitivity and respect for the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the children and families we serve. Understanding and appreciating cultural differences is essential in promoting effective communication and building trust.

About Stop Child Abuse (SCA):

Stop Child Abuse (SCA) is a Refugee-led organization operating in Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps. We are dedicated to protecting children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation while promoting their rights and fostering a safe, nurturing environment for their growth and development.

SCA is currently implementing the project “Empowering Communities to Protect and Promote Child Rights in Kakuma Through Social Emotional Learning and Advocacy,” and we are seeking passionate and qualified individuals to join our team as Facilitators.


Key Responsibilities:

As a Facilitator, you will play a vital role in delivering project activities and ensuring the success of our child protection initiative. Your key responsibilities will include:

  1. Facilitation of Training and Workshops:
    • Conduct community training sessions on child rights, social-emotional learning (SEL), and advocacy.
    • Use participatory and inclusive approaches to engage children, parents, and community leaders.
  2. Community Engagement:
    • Mobilize community members to participate in project activities, including awareness campaigns and advocacy forums.
    • Serve as a liaison between the community and SCA to ensure effective communication and feedback.
  3. Support Service Delivery:
    • Provide psychosocial support to children and families where needed.
    • Work closely with the SCA team to identify and refer cases of abuse to appropriate services, such as legal or medical assistance.
  4. Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Collect data on training attendance, community feedback, and activity outcomes.
    • Prepare and submit detailed reports on workshops, advocacy sessions, and other project activities.
  5. Advocacy and Awareness Campaigns:
    • Organize and participate in community advocacy events to promote child rights and prevent abuse.
    • Contribute to the development of materials for campaigns, such as posters, flyers, and radio messages.

Qualifications and Requirements:

To be considered for this position, you should meet the following criteria:

  1. Education and Experience:
    • Minimum of a diploma in Social Work, Education, Community Development, Psychology, or a related field.
    • At least 2 years of experience in facilitating training, community outreach, or working with children and youth in a similar context.
  2. Skills and Competencies:
    • Strong facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.
    • Knowledge of child protection, children’s rights, and social-emotional learning frameworks.
    • Proficiency in community mobilization and participatory training techniques.
    • Fluency in English and Kiswahili; knowledge of local languages spoken in the camps is an added advantage.
  3. Personal Attributes:
    • Passionate about working with children and promoting their rights.
    • Culturally sensitive and respectful of diversity.
    • Self-motivated, organized, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
